             A SJDB Overview

Before and After January 1, 2013

Effective January 1, 2013 SB 863 dramatically changed the Supplemental Job Displacement Benefit (SJDB) Voucher that would effect the outcome for all injured workers.

The new rules require injured workers to seek out  schools, jobs placement,  and careers now on their own.   Injured workers who can not figure out how to work with the voucher are often  left to depend upon the advice of the schools or encounter massive confusion.

Injured workers, however, can elect to work with a vocational return-to-work counselor who can assist them in navigating the system with greater ease.

Injured workers can select training from "The State of California’s Eligible Training Provider List (ETPL) list".  These  schools are public and are more affordable than the Bureau for Private Post-Secondary Education (BPPE) List.  We also can access additional resources to help you get through your schooling easier in the State schools as opposed to BPPE.

Workers can get up to $500 for miscellanious expenses with no documentation.  The purchase of a computer or laptop,  software programs and school materials will offer a $1,000 allotment.  In the event you choose to go into a trade,  laptop and computer fees can be used for tools required for training.

SJDB Vocational/ Return to Work Counselors can provide many valuable services to help the injured worker which can include:

  • School & Program Selection
  • Assessment testing to help select an occupation
  • Attention to physical challenges.
  • Support, and Experience of a Trained Professional
  • Career Counseling
  • Career decision-making and planning
  • Referral to Accredited and Reputable Schools/Programs
  • Career Placement Options
  • Additional Resources
  • Transitions
